Default starter doesn't engage when ignition switch is in "start" position

I'm just now having problems with my 04 Titan. Turn the key to start and all I get is the dash warning lights, as usual, and a discharge indication on the amp gauge. The starter doesn't engage, nothing. Then on the next try, it all works. At one time I attemped a start and it took several tries to finally make the complete circuit and start. It has me concerned it will leave me stranded somewhere. I haven't looked at the manual on CD yet to see the troubleshoot procedures, was hoping someone had already experienced this and can stear me in the right direction.
Question: does the starter have the start solonoid built in? And is dropping the starter pretty straight forward, any surprises?
    Thanks to all who replies.

    Default

Its either the starer is about to give out or ignition switch connection may be loose.
